10 Ways To Improve Your Finances in 2023

We have all made new year’s resolutions at least once in our lives. It’s the perfect opportunity to start fresh, a vow to create a better self in the coming year. There are many typical resolutions like to start working out, to eat healthier, to travel more, etc; all of these are great things to work towards, unless your financial situation is the thing that’s keeping you from living your best life. If you’ve never considered financial new year’s resolutions and don’t know where to start, then start here! True Sky Credit Union has created this list of 10 ways to improve your finances in 2023 in hopes that this will be YOUR year financially.

10 Financial New Year’s Resolutions for 2023:

Here is True Sky Credit Union’s take on 10 ways to improve your finances in 2023, some of which you might have heard before like improving your personal savings and things you may not have considered, like reevaluating your insurance. All of that and more, below!

1. Track your spending with a budget

You’ve probably heard just how important it is to have a good budget about 100 times, so what’s hearing it one more time going to hurt?

BUDGET BUDGET BUDGET!

But don’t just create any old budget, create a budget that fits your lifestyle! Meaning, if you like to go out a lot, then budget those outings, or maybe slowly start to restrict your outings that cost money, with doing things that are free! Whatever you need to do to make it easier to stick to your budget.

2. Focus on paying off any debt

It can feel that your debt is a never ending cycle, we understand! But we also understand the importance of having control over your debt. Maybe in this coming year you put your focus on new strategies to pay off your debt. Remember, every cent counts, so don’t give up!

3. Improve your personal savings

Saving just a little something is a lot better than not saving anything at all. Factoring savings into your monthly budget should become a priority, and your future self will thank you! If you’re struggling with how to save money, reach out to your closest True Sky Credit Union and we’d be happy to discuss ways to save.

4. Work towards a better credit score

As we have mentioned in some of our other blogs, working towards a better credit score has many benefits, especially for your long term goals. Increasing your credit score allows you access to lower interest rates on credit cards, car loans, personal loans, home loans, and more.

5. Take online security seriously

With the enhanced kinds of technology we have now, it’s a lot easier for hackers to participate in financial scamming, bank account hacking, and credit fraud. Take our advice and practice these basic online financial security tips in 2023:

  • Set alerts on your bank accounts and credit cards
  • Use unique passwords for all your accounts
  • Regularly check your financial reports for unusual activity

6. Analyze your insurance choices

Yearly analysis of your insurance is a smart idea you may not have considered, but evaluating your insurance like how much coverage you need, what you no longer need, etc. could help you save money so it can be better spent in other areas.

7. Review your subscriptions

Reviewing your automatic subscriptions is an easy way to start off the new year with good financial evaluations of what your money is currently being spent on. You might be surprised to see that you may have forgotten to cancel a subscription after the “30-free trial”. Really evaluate whether or not you need all your subscriptions in the coming year.

8. Invest

Investing goes along with saving money–in a way. We recommend you set a monthly x amount of dollars to use to invest regardless of what the market looks like. Kind of like paying yourself first, you’re investing in yourself first.

9. Create a will

Although thinking about creating a will might seem gruesome, it’s a responsible step towards financial security. Having a written document and understanding amongst those in your life of who would get what and what would happen in the case of your unforeseen death will not only allow you to acknowledge all of your assets, but it will be a relief knowing that your belongings will be properly taken care of.

10. Practice sustainability

If the other 9 tips we provided are a little out of your reach at the moment, then tip number 10 is for you! Practicing sustainability is the easiest thing anyone can do to help the planet AND your bank account. There’s a saying that goes, “the most sustainable products are the ones you don’t buy”, so take a page from our book and use what you already have!
